Displaying and Summarizing Univariate Quantitative Data
(0)Students will compare and contrast graphical displays (histogram vs. stem-and-leaf plot) and summary statistics (mean vs. median).
Prerequisite Knowledge
- Students should be able to distinguish between different types of data (categorical vs. quantitative).
Learning Objectives
- Interpret methods for summarizing and comparing data sets: the common graphical tools of histograms and stem-and-leaf displays and the summary statistics, mean and median.
Description
The goal of the activity is for students to compare and contrast graphical displays and summary statistics. Students are asked to calculate the mean and median for different sets of data and prompted to decide which would be appropriate for different distributions.
Suggested Uses, Tips and Discoveries
This activity can be an introduction to the mean, median, histograms and stem-and-leaf plots. Students should already have some knowledge of different data types.
The activity is appropriate for all class sizes and formats and was designed to be implemented as an in-class activity, but can be adapted for other uses, such as a homework assignment. The exercise will take approximately 20 - 30 minutes to complete.
The data was taken from Box Office Mojo (https://www.boxofficemojo.com/), an online database that contains information about movies, television shows, and video games. Instructors can modify the dataset to analyze different variables or update the dataset to the current year.
